What is a hiit workout

The world as we know it is changing rapidly around us and so many of us are working harder than ever. After a global pandemic resulted in a major setback in our professional careers, people are now forced to work extra-long hours, overtime and even on weekends to get back on track. This leaves many with the question: “How will I find time to exercise to shed the weight I gained during the lockdown?”

The answer is simple: High-intensity interval training (Hereafter referred to as HIIT).

What exactly is HIIT?

HITT stands for High-intensity interval training.

This fitness trend has become one of the most popular forms of exercising because of its potential to burn the maximum amount of calories in a minimum amount of time.

So, if you are on a tight schedule, then this is the one for you.

HITT workout

Typically, a HIIT workout would range between 14 - 30 minutes and despite how short the workout is, it can produce similar health benefits to twice as much exercise with moderate-intensity. The idea of a HIIT workout is to do short bursts of vigorous exercise that make your heart rate speed up. Many fitness influencers we see daily on our social media feeds make use of this type of training for the very fact that it offers their fans short yet effective workout routines.

What are the benefits of a HITT workout?

There are many benefits of a HITT workout, let us look at some of the main ones:

Burn more calories in less time

The first and most obvious benefit of a HITT workout is that it allows you to burn a lot of calories in a very short amount of time. So, for people on-the-go, a HITT workout will get you in amazing shape in no time. Research has found that a HITT workout can burn up to 25–30% more calories than the other forms of exercise. So instead of hanging around at the gym for hours on end, this workout allows you to burn the maximum energy in the shortest time.

Speed up your metabolism

Bonus, right? I cannot think of anyone who wouldn’t want this added benefit to their workout. According to studies, a HIIT workout has an impressive ability to increase your metabolic rate even for hours after your workout. And as if this hasn’t given us enough reason to invest in a HITT training program, researchers have even found that this type of exercise was also found to shift the body’s metabolism toward using fat for energy rather than carbs.

Swop fat for muscle

Due to the intense nature of a HITT workout, it has been found that it can help you lose bodyweight and by adding the right workout combinations, it can help you gain some muscle too. Though there are other forms of exercise that allow swap fat for muscleindividuals to gain muscle a lot faster, a HITT workout can help those who would like to “tone up” a bit.

Heart health

Aside from the fact that you can get in great shape while only exercising for 30 minutes, HIIT workouts also have amazing health benefits. A large amount of research indicates that it can reduce heart rate and blood pressure in overweight and obese individuals, who often have high blood pressure.

HIIT is for everyone

This workout does not discriminate. Where some are just naturally built to jog for hours or swim for miles, HIIT workouts are personalized to fit the needs of the individual. Your trainer at Fitness Fables will guide you in choosing the right combination of exercise routines for optimal results while keeping you interested and inspired. Most people when they hear HIIT, immediately think of burpees and jump-squats, however, HIIT has a much broader scope than this. A HIIT workout will look very different for a 50-year-old who is working with a trainer to get their heart rate up and down; this may entail an inclined walk on the treadmill for the high-intensity portion and then slow hip bridges on a yoga mat as the low-intensity recovery. A 20-something individual may comfortably do lunge jumps with dumbbells or weights for the high-intensity portion followed by sit-ups for the low-intensity recovery. Like we said, HIIT is for everyone.
