Finding balance in the middle of Covid-19

Finding balance with covid 19

In 2020 South Africa along with the rest of the world was hit by a global pandemic we know as COVID-19. What seemed like a virus that will pass soon, has now become so evident in our country that you won't find a single individual who has not been affected or know of someone who has been affected by the virus. Many of us know someone who has passed away from this virus.

In many of our previous blogs, you would have picked up that we at Fitness Fables emphasize the importance of balance and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. This seems like an easy task until reality sets in and we realize that our “new normal” ways of living make it extremely hard to maintain the balance we want.

How COVID has tipped our “balance” and how to gain it back

Unless you are living on a deserted island, your life has probably been changed by COVID one way or another. Our once balanced lifestyles are certainly not as balanced anymore.

Physical activities

Many people find this one the hardest to cope with. If you are a regular gym-goer or an avid runner, then 2020 must have been extremely hard for you. Hitting the gym before or after work has become a part of many of our daily routines. While the gyms have re-opened, many people still fear coming into contact with someone who has COVID-19. A gym is also a confined space where people sweat, some don’t wear masks and some don’t wipe down their used equipment or machinery.

There is no reason to let COVID have such a big impact on your physical fitness as it does right now. If you don't want to visit the gym, then we suggest going for a jog around the block or doing home-workouts that you can find on our Youtube channel. If you want to visit the gym, but are a bit cautious, we would like to put you at ease. At Fitness Fables we make sure that we check temperatures, we sanitise regularly, we make sure that our clients follow the rules of wiping down equipment after use and we also ensure that we open enough doors and windows for ventilation to prevent the spreading of germs.

Diet

If you gained a few pounds during the lockdown, then join the club. In fact, we think you are probably a superhuman if you actually managed to lose weight during lockdown levels 5 and 4, good for you though. But for those who have fallen victim to banana bread and illegally sourced wine, don't be too hard on yourself. Due to the intense nature of this virus, it has caused many people to turn to comfort food during this time. We underestimate the way this pandemic has had an impact on our thoughts and emotions and we can see it in the way people have lost their will to be the "best versions" of themselves and instead we all just want to survive. Aside from trying to recover after some emotional eating during the lockdown, we are also limited when it comes to a night of dining at our favorite restaurants or meeting up for drinks and pizza like we used to.

One of our favorite mottos when it comes to eating is: “One must eat to live, not live to eat.” Jean-Baptiste Poquelin.

It is important to fuel your body with the amount that it needs not the amount that it wants. Note that we only highlight quantity - The reason for this is because we believe that each body is different and each person has a different goal so it is more about how much you eat more than it is about what you eat. We will never tell our clients to now only eat veggies and lettuce, we want you to maintain a sustainable and balanced diet that you can stick to. So if you have some damage control after the months of lockdown, we suggest making your portions smaller, focusing on consuming fewer carbs and sugar since these only keep you full for a short time, and you will end up overeating again. Talk to a trainer at Fitness Fables for the right dietary plan to make sure you do it the right way.

Recreational activities

Whether you loved going clubbing, eating out, or attending concerts as your favorite recreational activities, you are one of many who is probably missing those hobbies that kept you sane and happy. COVID has robbed many of us of large social gatherings, parties, and team-sports that have always been apart of what makes our lives "balanced".

Group activities and late nights are still, unfortunately, a "no-go" for all of us but this is a great opportunity for you to get out of your comfort zone and get yourself into a new "safe" hobby. There are many social recreational activities you can do in the comfort of your own home. These include things like learning to play a new instrument, hosting a game night with a few friends, start doing yoga, learn how to do boxing, or learn to cook. All of these things are recreational hobbies you can enjoy and that will help you feel less "deprived" of the recreational activities you are used to.

COVID-19 has taken its toll on many of us. It has stolen loved-ones, closed business doors, made some people experience depression or anxiety and it has thrown off the natural balance of all of our lives. The only thing we can do is to adapt our lives and make sure we do all we can to get into the groove of the “new normal” and make it our own. So keep your head up, look ahead and keep going. You are doing great!
