You probably almost chocked on your iced-latte laughing at the subject of this blog, we would have too. Staying in shape during the festive season seems like an impossible task, but not only is it impossible to do, the truth is that nobody wants to lose weight during those times. You’d much rather postpone your summer body till after you have eaten your Moms famous skaapboud for Christmas.

Many have read the subject of this blog and didn’t bother reading it, and we don’t blame them. But if you are still reading then we would like to say first of all, good for you. Staying in shape on a regular day is hard as it is, but trying to stay in shape during the holidays when you are surrounded by ice-cream and Simba chippies, seems like your worst nightmare but it doesn’t have to be that way. Which brings us to our second point - It’s not as difficult as it seems.

There are many ways you can prevent yourself from gaining your lockdown weight back up again and here’s how:


Watch what you eat

The festive season is there for having fun, having some drinks and really just letting go of your inhibitions a little and you deserve it especially after a year like we just had. However, it shouldn’t mean that you should completely lose sight of what is good for your body and mind. Try not to deviate too much from the diet you are used to. During this festive season, it is totally okay to enjoy an ice-cold beer after a round of golf or a cocktail by the pool at 11:00, however since alcohol was not part of your daily food-and-drink intake, you may lose track of how many kilojoules you are consuming and you may step into 2021 looking like Homer Simpson. Eat that soft-serve with the kids, enjoy two glasses of wine for dinner, but remember to keep everything moderate.

Stay active

This is a common mistake a lot of people tend to make. Just like we suggest you try not to deviate too much from your normal diet, the same would apply to your physical activity. If your day job requires you to walk up and down stairs or force you to always be moving, then don’t expect to stay in shape if you lounge around all day in sweats. Physical activity is an important part of each one of our daily lives, without it, comes a lot of health risks aside from gaining weight. To stay in shape during the holidays you need to keep yourself accountable for your actions or lack thereof. Wake up early for a 30-minute walk on the beach, play with your kids and pets outside, go for a hike or go for a swim. These things are considered leisure activities and will be sure to keep you in shape. 


Say no to sugar

Wait! Don’t scroll past this one just yet. Remember that Christmas, along with its deep religious intent has also become a massive commercialized event for the food industry. If you had to associate a “taste” with Christmas, it would probably be “sweet”. Candy canes, Fruit-cake and chocolate gifts are some of the things that come to mind when we think of Christmas. Be mindful that you will probably consume more sugary foods during the festive times than you would on a normal day and we are not talking about candy only. Sugar comes hidden in all forms and if we are not wary of this, you might eat yourself into a sugar addiction this festive season and ultimately gain some weight as a result. 


The last thing you would want to do on your holiday is exercise, we get that. But what if we told you that you can stay in shape wherever you are in just 25-minutes. Do it together

Trying not to gain 10kgs during these festive times can be tough, especially if your wife will be making her famous Malva pudding with custard. A simple solution is to get your partner/spouse/household on board with the idea of staying in good shape against all odds. Having someone to hold you accountable is a great way to achieve your goals. Instead of enjoying your Brandewyn and Coke with each braai, switch it up with diet Coke, or instead of eating pudding after every single meal, try to limit yourself to having dessert on Sundays only. 

Small changes like these will be sure to leave you feeling great about yourself at the new year sets in.
